I watched a very interesting seminar on c-span last night. Thomas Barnett is definitely a great speaker and the topic was very engaging. I can't say I am an expert enough to back up any skepticism I had about the points he made (there were very few) but he surely seemed to know what he was talking about and was able to make a very compelling case that he was at least mostly right. Thomas Barnett is the author of a book called The Pentagon's New Map
and this is very likely a book worth reading. Mr. Barnett is not only intelligent and well reasoned but witty and master of his audience.
I googled him and found that he has a weblog
here which I have blogrolled. Reading through it, I was surprised to find that he is a Democrat and even more so to learn that he plans on voting for Kerry. Lest this throw your excitement for his opinion I will vouch for him. I wish there were more like him in his own party as well as mine.
He also writes for esquire magazine and this article
, among others, covers some broad points that were in his presentation which is also derived from his book from what I could tell.
The assertions he makes and his reasoning behind them are both chilling and hopeful. Many things he said last night gave me rare insight in to the WoT and the way the DoD is run and will be run. One thing that hopped out at me is his point that no so-called "new core" countries are militarily involved in Iraq. This would be emerging oil consuming nations like India and China .
When Kerry talks about his secret plan and bringing on allies, he is probably not talking so much about France and Germany. He wants you to think he is talking about them, but perhaps during the debates we will discover he is talking about nations that have a growing vested interest in a stable Middle East. I now expect that to be a part of his attack on the coalition in Iraq at some point. Heads Up...
